Motivation From an Odd Place

I’m still trying to get used to my Saturday’s not being filled with football but this past Saturday there was something on TV that was almost as good. I’m not talking about college basketball I’m talking about a “Rocky” marathon. Luckily I realized this was on just as “Rocky IV” was starting. Even though the movie came out before I was born it does not seem that old. Either that or I do not feel as old as I should but I’m going to go with the first one.

There are certainly some corny lines and laughable scenes (the “No Easy Way Out” montage comes to mind) but I can’t help but get motivated by some of Rocky’s lines. His exchange with Adrain when first deciding he’s going to fight the Russian is especially good.

“No maybe I can’t win. Maybe the only thing I can do is just take everything he’s got. But to beat me, he’s going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he’s going to have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he’s got to be willing to die himself. I don’t know if he’s ready to do that.”

However my favorite speech comes from the final installment in the series, “Rocky Balboa”. I love listening to this because it reminds me that life isn’t supposed to be easy. You can make excuses, even valid ones, constantly but at the end of the day if you want to change your circumstances it is up to you.
